Night Guards & Sports Mouth Guards

Night Guards and mouthguards are custom molded to fit your teeth with flexible plastic. Mouthguards are made primarily to protect the jaw, tongue, cheek lining and teeth during physical activity and sports in which there is a risk your mouth might get hit like football, boxing, wrestling, basketball, etc. On the other hand, Nightguards are recommended for patients who clench and grind their teeth at night. We can decide if a guard is the best solution for you, which we will then take an impression of your teeth and sent it to a lab to make a custom fit guard. It’s important to keep in mind that guards last anywhere between 3 and 10 years.

TMJ Treatment

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint and it is used to describe disorders and dysfunctions in those joints; these areas can include the temple area of the skull, the lower jaw, and the joint where the head and the jaw meet. Problems in this area can be caused by trauma, teeth being misaligned or excessive muscle tension. There are two bones that meet at the jaw and they are buffered by cartilage of five different muscles, so TMJ can cause multiple ailments such as:

  • Headaches
  • Earaches
  • Soreness in opening and closing the mouth
  • Clicking or popping on the jaw
  • Pain in jaw muscles
  • Soreness in the area extending to the face

To treat TMJ a dentist can replace missing teeth, move teeth that are causing pressure, adjusting the bite, filling gaps between teeth, prescribing a plastic mouthpiece, and a variety of different treatments especially since there is no one right solution that is right for all cases. If TMJ is left untreated and it reaches an extreme situation surgery may be needed to repair the joint that is damaged.
